If you are fond of breathtaking views and scenic beauty, Udaipur is a destination you shouldn’t miss out on.
The city of lakes in Rajasthan is the ideal combination of nature and history, and you will have an exciting time exploring what it has to offer. Among the numerous tourist attractions, Lake Pichola Udaipur is a must-visit.
History of Lake Pichola Udaipur
This artificial freshwater lake was built by a gypsy, Pichhu Banjara in 1362, who transported grain, during the reign of Maharana Lakha.
The Lake Pichola was formed by diverting course of water from a tributary of Kotra River, and a dam was built over it, which helped to move his animals while the grains were watered using dam water. Maharana Udai Singh was mightily impressed with the magnificence of the Lake Pichola, so he built the city of Udaipur on its banks, while aiding in its expansion too with the construction of a stone masonry dam in the Badipol area on the coast of the Lake
Gorgeous and Beautiful Lake Pichola Udaipur
Bordered by hills, gardens, temples, bathing ghats, and havelis, the name, Lake Pichola, is essentially referred to as “the backyard”. One of the largest and oldest, it is located in the heart of the city Udaipur in Rajasthan state.
The beauty of the Lake Pichola, the picturesque images of the monuments on the water and the lush green surroundings make this place worth visiting.
Despite its enthralling splendor, the unique feature that distinguishes Lake Pichola from other lakes is that it chances colors throughout the day. During the morning, the Lake Pichola takes on a stunning shade of blue, as if flaunting the depth, while turning golden when it is noon. At the time of sunset, the lake develops an orange-ish hue much like the setting sun on the horizon. The starry night paints the lake midnight blue with reflection of the palaces and forts in the water.
Lake Palace – also known as “The Floating Palace”
Jag Niwas Island is entirely covered by the Lake Palace, a 250 year old white marble and mosaic summer palace.
One of the most romantic places in the world, it is a beautiful palace, situated in the middle of the Lake Pichola. The palace is now a five star heritage hotel under Taj Group of hotels, with beautiful gardens and pavilions.
It has been painstakingly restored so the heritage is preserved properly. It appears to be emerging from the clear blue water, and is the most photographed hotel in India. The palace was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh as his summer home in 1740. Its courtyard has a restaurant offering dazzling scenic views.
Sheesh Mahal (The Mirror Palace), Krishna Vilas (The Abode of Lord Krishna), Chini Chitrashala (Chinese Art Gallery), Mor Chowk (Peacock Court) and the Amar Vilas (The Eernal Abode) are the main attractions of this palace.
Jag Mandir Palace
Jag Mandir palace is built on an island in Lake Pichola and is known for its beautiful interiors filled with exquisite Mughal paintings and grand style of architecture.
The intricate sculptures on the marbles are key attractions of this place apart from the majestic view of the Lake Pichola from the palace. Famous for serene boat rides and the grand solitude of the temple, Jag Mandir is definitely among the best places to visit in Udaipur.
It is well-known for Gul Mahal, a domed pavilion that was built by Maharana Jagat Singh. Although, Jag Mandir was built by Maharana Karan Singh, it takes its name from Maharana Jagat Singh who made a number of additions to it. He built a Zenana or the women’s section of this palace.
Famous as the star location in the movie “Octopussy” it has also gained historical importance, when Prince Khurram (later Shah Jahan) was given refuge here in a revolt against his father, Mughal Emperor Jahangir.
The island is well maintained, with fountains and a row of elephants that look like they are guarding the island.
City Palace of Udaipur
Built by the Mewar dynasty back in the 16th century, the two gateways, Bara Pol at the front and the triple arched Tripola at the back along with 8 arches between these two will leave you spellbound! Inside the palace complex the most prominent and famous structures are the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Mukut Mahal, Maharani’s Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum. The design is inspired by both Mughal and Rajput architecture.
The view of the magnificent City Palace of Udaipur from the Lake Pichola is just amazing. Just can’t put my feelings into words. As I always say, you’ve to see it for yourself.
Just look at the view of the City Palace of Udaipur from Lake Pichola.
How beautiful. Is it not?
Built between 1628 and 1652 by Maharana Jagat Singh, it was constructed in the memory of one of the unofficial sons of Maharana Jagat Singh, Mohandas, so it is a temple without a deity. Currently it is used for fireworks display during the Gangaur or Mewar festival.
There are a number of smaller islands to visit on Lake Pichola Udaipur as well – it is a lovely place that will ensure you have fond memories to cherish!
The boat ride is so much fun
I was in love with this lake the very moment I saw it from the City Palace Udaipur. And I was dying to explore it. My eyes were just glued to the sparkling blue water of the Lake Pichola which attracted me toward itself just like a flower which attracts a bee.
We did another amazing boat ride there which lasted for about 30 minutes. Again, it wasn’t a shared boat but a personal motor boat. Since there were many historical monuments there in the lake pichola, built on the small islands therefore, we preferred to take a personal motor boat instead of a Speed boat just to explore things bit more conveniently.
The boat was really comfortable and can carry around 5-6 adults easily. Now, this experience was totally different from what I experienced at the Fateh Sagar Lake.
The weather was very pleasant which added to our experience.
What an amazing boat ride it was exploring the nature and the surrounding at a slow pace.
This allowed me to capture delightful moments during the ride in Lake Pichola. Like, there was a moment when I was busy taking a video and few kids started waving at us while they were enjoying their speed boat ride.
Similarly, I was able to capture these exotic aquatic birds hunting fishes in the Lake Pichola. I clicked amazing pictures of Cormorant birds there in Lake Pichola.
If you are lucky, you can also spot other exotic birds like Gadwall and Comb ducks. Though I wasn’t able to spot the Gadwall birds and Comb ducks, I feel that I was lucky enough to spot the amazing Cormorants birds and could capture their activities in my camera while boating in Lake Pichola.
I must say that your excursion would be incomplete without the boat ride.
